Why convert JPG to BMP?

  • BMP is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
  • BMP is made for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

What to expect when converting JPG to BMP

  • Converting can’t bring back detail that JPG compression already removed: the BMP is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.
  • Your original JPG file isn’t changed: you download a new BMP copy.

Saving a JPG as BMP for older programs and simple devices

BMP is the format to reach for when software is too old or too simple to decode anything compressed: a legacy Windows program, a lab or factory application, a small display controller that reads raw pixels. The converter writes a standard 24-bit BMP, three bytes per pixel with no compression, which is the variant most such tools read.

Because nothing is compressed, the size follows directly from the dimensions: width times height times three bytes. A 1920 × 1080 picture lands around 6 MB, and a 12-megapixel phone photo around 36 MB, no matter how light the JPG was. If the device has a fixed screen, resize the picture to that exact resolution before converting; smaller dimensions are the only way to make a BMP smaller.

Image quality matches the JPG as it is now, compression marks included, because BMP stores the decoded pixels unchanged. There is no slider and no transparency to manage, since JPG has none. If the old program also reads PNG, a lossless PNG carries the same pixels in a far smaller file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to BMP?
Upload your JPG file above. It is converted to BMP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting JPG to BMP lose quality?
No new loss is added: BMP stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that JPG compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
JPG or BMP: which should I use?
Use JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload. Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Keep in mind the main drawback of BMP: very large files and no transparency.
What is a JPG file?
JPG is the standard format for photos. It shrinks files by discarding detail the eye barely notices, which suits photographs but blurs text and sharp edges.
Is the JPG to BMP converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.
