Shrinking JPG photos into AVIF for faster web pages

AVIF earns its place when you control the page a photo lives on: a product gallery, a blog post, a portfolio. It usually stores the same picture in fewer bytes than JPG, so pages load sooner on slow phone connections. It is not the format to email to a relative or hand to a print shop, because many editing apps and older devices still can't open it. Keep your JPG originals and treat the AVIF as the copy your site delivers.

Out of the box the slider sits at 90, which keeps nearly everything but leaves savings unused, and its own hint names 60 to 80 as the range that suits most photos. Try 70, compare the KB figure on the preview with your JPG, and zoom into hair, foliage and fine lettering before you settle. Lossless mode exists, yet on a JPG it only preserves the compression artifacts the JPG already has, often in a file bigger than the one you started with.

Encoding AVIF takes longer than JPG, so a large photo needs a little patience before the preview appears. Oversized camera files waste bandwidth in any format, so scale the photo to the width your page displays first. If your site builder rejects .avif, WebP is the more widely accepted step down.

Frequently asked questions
