Counting steel and plastic drums in a storage bay or rack
Chemical stores, oil depots, paint distributors and manufacturers count drums to check deliveries, track empties before a collection and support storage records. Drums stand upright in rows on pallets, lie on their sides in drum racks or fill a spill-containment bay. Drums on their sides show circular ends, so shoot the rack face straight-on; upright drums seen from a mezzanine or raised platform show their lids as circles.
A photo cannot tell a full drum from an empty one, so keep full and empty drums in separate marked areas and count each area on its own. Hazard labels, bung caps and lid rings form small circles of their own; if they gather dots, mark one complete drum lid or end as an example. Drums of different sizes or colors in one bay need one example each. Rows behind the front of a rack stay hidden, so only each visible face is counted and anything deeper is an estimate.
Label each tally row with the bay and the contents, then keep the CSV with the storage record. Wine barrels and beer kegs follow a similar routine on the barrel counter, gas bottles in a cage on the gas cylinder page, and whole pallets on the pallet counter.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I count a whole shelf accurately?
- Shoot each shelf face straight-on in even light, count the visible front row, and multiply by the row depth if the shelf is uniformly stocked — or photograph each row. The tally sheet adds shelf-by-shelf rows into one total.
- What if the photo has more than just drums in it?
- The counter automatically looks for drums in your photo. Similar-looking distractors can still affect the result, so review every marker before using the total.
- Can I count several photos into one total?
- Yes — count each photo and add every reviewed result to the tally sheet as a labelled row. Export the tally as CSV or a PDF report, or save it to your account.
- Is it free and private?
- Yes. You can count, review and download a free result without an account. Downloads are free without a watermark. No signup required. Server-processed photos are encrypted in transit and removed under our Security policy.
