Counting envelopes for a mailing run or postal collection

Mailrooms count outgoing envelopes before a postal collection, check a mailing run against the recipient list and reconcile postage meter charges. Envelopes lying flat on top of each other show only the top one, so the photo has to show each envelope some other way. Fan them across a table in an overlapping shingle so a strip of every edge shows, or stand a tray of letters on edge and photograph the edges from above.

A fanned batch works when each visible strip is wide enough to see; if the strips blur into one another, fan them wider or count in smaller batches. Window envelopes reflect light through the panel, so avoid harsh overhead lighting. Mixed sizes, such as standard letters and large flats, need one example of each. Postage stamps, address labels and logos repeat on every envelope and should not earn dots of their own.

Add each tray or batch as a tally row labeled with the mailing or the postage class, and export the CSV to attach to the postage record. Stamps on a sheet or in a collection are counted on the stamp counter, and parcels for the same collection on the parcel page.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on a loose pile?
It can only mark the visible layer. Spread items one layer deep, mark a clear example, and review and correct the result markers. Treat a visible-face count on a large pile as an estimate and use the same framing between checks.
What if the photo has more than just envelopes in it?
The counter automatically looks for envelopes in your photo. Similar-looking distractors can still affect the result, so review every marker before using the total.
Can I count several photos into one total?
Yes — count each photo and add every reviewed result to the tally sheet as a labelled row. Export the tally as CSV or a PDF report, or save it to your account.
Is it free and private?
Yes. You can count, review and download a free result without an account. Downloads are free without a watermark. No signup required. Server-processed photos are encrypted in transit and removed under our Security policy.
